About
In 2006, the AIA Central States Region voted to use surplus budget funding to support the needs of the Emerging Professionals in the region. A task force was created to determine the needs of Emerging Professionals in the Midwest region and recommend how the regional AIA component could best support those needs. From the discussion, a budged and timeline were to be determined. Since the start of the task force, there has been a survey to the associate membership to determine a better focus for the Emerging Professional Task Force.
A charrette was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma this September. The task force helped guide an invigorating discussion about the future for young architects in the Central States. Topics of interest included ARE+IDP, how to entice young talented architects to stay within the Central States after graduation, and how to communicate among components in a spread out region.
The suggestions and ideas from the charrette are being taken very seriously by the planning committee for the 2008 Central States Region Conference in Kansas City. A high energy, youth-oriented program of events is being planned, including a regional version of the popular Monstors of Design Competition which is open to young designers in architecture, environmental graphics, industrial design, and engineering.
Now, how does that all relate to the AIA Central States?...As Regional Associate Directors, we are obligated to develop programming and recommending policy concerning Associate membership and internship issues to the AIA Board of Directors and AIA ExCom through their elected representatives. We, like the AIA, are dedicated to serving our associate members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. By promoting these initiatives now, we can foster greater architects in the future.
With all this said, the Central States Emerging Professionals Committee is well on its way to help foster the great ideas from the charrette to make advances in our programming for interns. We cant manage all these tasks alone, so we look to the AIA Central States Board to provide support. They have already provided funding, support and extremely beneficial AIA members to the committee. We ask for the continuing support from the AIA for our continuing initiatives:
1.Increase communicataion in the region between Emerging Professionals
2.Mentor and firm education on IDP
3.Path to licensure, ARE & IDP timing
4.Emerging Professional track at the regional conference
With these initiatives in place, we will be able to help foster the future of our profession.
