AIA Central States Internship Guidelines for Firms Program
2009 AIA CSR Emerging Professionals Task Force
Is your firm intern friendly? The AIA CSR Emerging Professionals Task Force is launching a new Intern Friendly Firm campaign to recognize member firms that support and encourage architectural interns to complete IDP and pass the ARE. The primary intentions of this program are to create a resource for emerging professionals and students and to encourage firms to be more active in the internship process.
Why should your firm promote comprehensive training of our architectural interns? The comprehensive training your architectural interns receive is crucial to their professional development. If they are well trained and have a broad range of experience, they will be better prepared to pass the ARE and become competent licensed Architects. The IDP established by NCARB provides a structured environment for training and development of the core competencies needed by every Architect in practice today.
By emphasizing training, your firm can help its architectural interns prepare for the challenges of the practice of architecture in the future. Every state in the country, except one, requires completion of NCARB’s IDP prior to licensure. By emphasizing IDP and providing in-house support for your architectural interns, you are creating a resource to attract, train, and retain top quality employees. Being an Intern Friendly Firm will not only enhance your practice, but your firm will benefit from the increased competence, versatility, and productivity of employees fully exposed to the complexities of professional practice today.
Firms should find the IDP training standard and core competencies a practical guide for architectural intern work assignments In addition; the IDP can provide the framework for the productive application of the mentor/supervisor relationship, a vital and integral part of the training process for emerging professionals today. Architectural interns realize that internship is a two-way street. Those who receive opportunities for exposure to the 16 IDP training areas will require this commitment with a dedication and effort that exceed normal employment.
The Program
This campaign will give member firms “Intern Friendly Firm” designation within our region. To be considered, the applicant firm must complete, and turn in for review, their application. There is no charge to be considered and “Intern Friendly Firm”, only your firm’s dedication to this effort. Upon application approval, your firm will be notified through email and receive designation on the AIA CSR Emerging Professionals website www.aiacsrep.org and at the Central States Regional Conference in October. The “Intern Friendly Firm” status is valid for two years.
